Watch These Hilarious Reaction Videos From Elders

Raise your hand if you’re familiar with any of the following: Flappy Bird, selfie, Eminem, Pewdiepie, grinding, or dubstep. Now keep your hand raised if you know what all of them have in common. This seemingly nonsensical string of words all comprise a popular video series on YouTube called “Elders React to…” in which elders are either shown a video or have to play a game, and then comment on it after. It’s an endearing look at what happens when different generations meet, and here are some of the best videos.

Elders React to Flappy Bird

This game was developed by Dong Nguyen in 2013 and enjoyed a short shelf life before he pulled the plug because he felt bad for the game causing its users so much stress and addiction. The premise is quite simple: “tap” the bird up and down and navigate it through a series of openings between vertical pipes. However, aligning the bird just so is a rather tricky proposition, and it isn’t long before the elders in this video are cursing and waving their arms around helplessly.

Elders React to Old Spice Commercials

Old Spice is one of those brands that feels like it’s been around forever, and yet it still endures. Part of its appeal is its new marketing campaign, which features new levels of ridiculousness that, as one elder commented, “sort of leaves you speechless, doesn’t it?” But as each commercial is played, the male and female elders react differently, and it’s definitely worth watching their reactions.

Elders React to Justin Bieber

The pop singer has made quite a negative name for himself in the last couple of years, and when he’s announced as the winner of the new Billboard Milestone Award, one elder hangs his head in disappointment before muttering, “Surprise, surprise, surprise.” Another snarls, “What a joke”, while a third snips, “Who voted on this?” Bieber’s hubris is what seems to annoy the elders most of all, such as when he says, “I’m 19 years old and I think I’m doing a pretty good job.” When one elder hears that, he responds, “When I was 19 years old, I was up to here (holds a hand up to his face) in rice paddy water, looking for people to shoot.”

Elders React to Twerking

This new “dance” phenomenon, popularized by Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke, is either the hottest new thing or the worst fad to come along in recent memory. As the video begins to play, the elders clue into it being twerking, with one commenting, “Of course, it looks good on the young people. I don’t know about the older set.” While most of them are mildly amused — one elder’s head bobs in time to the music — most of them can’t believe that the younger generation would actually move so suggestively in public.

Elders React to Challenges! (Cinnamon, Salt & Ice, & Milk Chug)

Challenges are when someone posts a video of themselves doing accomplishing completely ridiculous, like trying to ingest a spoonful of cinnamon (it’s supposed to be impossible because the cinnamon sucks all the moisture out of your mouth), mixing Coke and Mentos (the two combine to “explode”) or chugging as much milk as possible. It’s completely inane, with one elder summing up the concept adroitly: “Why would you want to do this?” Nobody’s really sure, with all of them expressing complete bewilderment.
