Using antibiotics for the long-term can pose a variety of health risks to seniors, including reducing their immunities. If you have a poor immune system, you are at risk for the flu, pneumonia and other illnesses which are very hard on your body as you age. Before turning to prescription antibiotics, try natural remedies for getting rid of infection. These should be used when you’re getting the same types of infections over and over again, but not in place of your doctor’s advice. Always consult your doctor before taking anything new.

Garlic

Garlic is one of the most common natural antibiotics that are safe for seniors to ingest. Garlic has been used to treat earaches, pneumonia and other illnesses for over a thousand years. Garlic naturally has antioxidants that can actually kill bacteria, not to mention being great at protecting your immune system. If you don’t want a high amount of garlic in your food, such as due to acid reflux or other medical conditions, you can take a garlic supplement each day.

Echinacea

Another popular supplement for treating infections naturally and strengthening the immune system is Echinacea. If you have ever been to an herbalist, they most likely recommend Echinacea. This is because of the many healing properties the herb has. In previous generations, Echinacea was used to treat wounds, cellulitis and blood poisoning. It is now used often as a natural antibiotic alternative. Some of the illnesses Echinacea is most commonly used for is the flu and cold, along with staphylococcus (staph) infections.

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver can also be used as a natural antibiotic due to its antibacterial and germicidal properties. It is successful at killing viruses, bacteria and infections from fungus. Topical wounds, infections and sores are often treated with colloidal silver supplements.

Onions – closely related to the healing properties of garlic, onion is just as effective at getting rid of infection. Onion is another natural food product that has antibiotic properties and has been used since ancient Rome at healing various illnesses. Aside from healing infections, onions are great at reducing inflammation, increasing circulation and treating the common cold or influenza (flu).

Honey – If you have honey in your home, particularly manuka honey, you’re in luck because it is also a natural antibiotic. This is not ingested for infections, but rather used as a topical ointment for infections from an open wound. Honey has anti-microbial properties and is effective for people who tend to be resistant to certain types of antibiotics. The honey can be applied directly to the wound to help treat the infection caused by fungi or bacteria.
